Rants: 10/21/2003 - Yaoi isn't that Cute!
By Pizazz

THIS RANT CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS!

I’m going to talk about something that regularly comes up in conversation with any otaku. Usually among rabid fangirls. I’m talking about yaoi, shounen-ai, slash, or whatever you call it. Before I rant, please keep in mind that I am not against homosexuality in any way, shape or form. It’s just the sudden explosion of yaoi fandom that’s got my blood boiling. I mean, when I stumble across Invader Zim slash fanfics with a Zim/Dib pairing, I can’t help but wonder what the writers were drinking. Personally, I feel that shounen-ai should be left to the couples that are actually homosexual, like Yuki and Shuichi from Gravitation.

A lot of the time, it seems that half the characters in shounen-ai fanfics and doujinshi are really, truly, very straight. For some reason, many a fangirl (or fanboy if that’s the case), thought the idea of two anime males snogging to be sexy or even cute. I would agree, if it wasn’t for the fact that those two anime males are straight. Or in some cases, related to each other. A good example of this would be Vash and Wolfwood from Trigun. Vash is in love with Meryl -- rabid shounen-ai fangirs would argue that I can’t back that up, and quite frankly I can’t at the moment. However, it is difficult to argue with the fact that Wolfwood had sex with Milly. And it wasn’t a meaningless bed-romp either. During Wolfwood’s final monologue, he thought about Milly the most. And it was quite obvious that Milly loved Wolfwood as well, what with the hysterical crying that followed his death. As for the incest thing, that gets most peoples’ skin crawling, so I don’t really need to say much there.

That's about it. All I can hope is that people realize that yeah, gay couples are cute... but straight couples can be too. It seems that a lot of rabid fangirls have forgotten that.
